The Section on Alternative Dispute Resolution of the
Association of American Law Schools (AALS) was founded in 1983 following a
conference on the subject convened by Professor Frank E. A. Sander at Harvard
Law School. Since that time, the section has conducted at least one educational session (and usually two or more) at the annual
AALS meeting. The program for a particular year is selected by the chair of the
section, with the assistance of other section members. In addition, the section
has twice conducted midyear educational meetings at which the teaching of
alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and ADR skills have been considered.
From 1983 to 1995, the section sponsored The Alternative Newsletter.
The newsletter was created by James Boskey of Seton Hall Law School and
continues to be published by him as an independent publication. It is designed
to provide a wide range of information on developments in ADR in the United
States and around the world.
