Similar to rapid relaxation is Albert Ellis's technique of
rational emotive therapy, or RET. This theory suggests that anger is a result of
your response to a situation, not the situation itself. So you can control your
anger by controlling your thoughts. RET focuses especially on dispelling
destructive, "irrational" ideas and replacing them with constructive, "rational"
thoughts. These thoughts can then be used to develop a constructive response to
anger-creating situations.
