Rational Emotive Therapy

Similar to rapid relaxation is Albert Ellis's technique of rational emotive therapy, or RET. This theory suggests that anger is a result of your response to a situation, not the situation itself. So you can control your anger by controlling your thoughts. RET focuses especially on dispelling destructive, "irrational" ideas and replacing them with constructive, "rational" thoughts. These thoughts can then be used to develop a constructive response to anger-creating situations.
