Other techniques for calming down include deep breathing,
counting, or using rapid relaxation. Rapid relaxation, as described by Hankin,
involves four steps. First is refocusing attention away from the provocation
toward a desired resolution. Second is relaxing with calming self-talk. Third is
reevaluating—putting the situation into perspective and analyzing how important
it really is. Is it important enough to risk your life, a treasured
relationship, a job, your health, or your reputation? Probably not. The fourth
step is refreshing—becoming aware of the physical, emotional, and mental power
you can attain by calming down and maintaining your self-balance and
control.
